Foss safely and efficiently handles any type of bulk materials and lighterage as well as related marine engineering solutions and logistics required for the most complicated jobs. We support petroleum lighterage for major oil and gas customers and are the only company in the world that offers open-ocean lighterage.

Our Experience

Foss owns and operates two self-unloading bulk cargo lighterage barges in service to Teck Cominco, which operates the Red Dog Mine, located approximately 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Northwest Alaska. These specially designed lighterage barges allow cargo discharge in sea conditions previously considered too rough for such operations. Lighterage barges, which require less dredging and smaller vessel loading facilities, can be used in a variety of situations.

Foss provides marine support services for operations at the Pacific Area Lightering (PAL), where our customer employs the world’s largest tankers, which are too large to enter California ports. We also support tanker operations that supply refineries in El Segundo and Richmond, California. In addition to providing maintenance and delivery of large fenders and rigging expertise, Foss operates a crew launch and supply vessel, line-handling tugs, and assist tugs.

Our fleet of tugs and barges also provide support for dredging, lighterage and barging of aggregate materials, including coal, zinc, sand, rock and gravel.

Foss tugs and barges provide dredging and lighterage of aggregate material in San Francisco Bay.

Foss works closely with all parties in lighterage events to reduce risk and maximize efficiency.
